A note about knitting

So, I actually HAVE been knitting, I just haven’t had the time to write about it. I finished my first pair of socks! YAY! (Maybe I already wrote that) The problem is I don’t want to wear it because I don’t want to wear them out. How sad is that? I started on a pair for Michael, and with the suggestion from Ingrid (my SP8 spoiler), I decided to do the Jaywalker pattern at MagKnits.

The sock that’s too small for Michael

OK, so it’s all my fault that it turned out horrible. With all the moving, I misplaced my measuring tape to check the gauge, so I just went “by feel”. I had no idea that the tape measures here ONLY has centimeters. On both sides! Does that make sense? I mean I know they don’t have English measurements normally, but there are a lot of British/American things in the craft world where inches would be useful. I checked several stores only to be severely disappointed. I started on the bigger size, but as I was knitting it, it just seemed too big. And based on the last sock, I wanted something tighter. So I started on the smaller one. Everything went fine. The Regia yarn that I got accentuated the zigzags, although it’s not as luxurious feeling as the Cherry Tree Hill yarn. After I turned the heel, I had him try it on and his ankle area is so big that it doesn’t fit. I got so frustrated that I stopped knitting. I didn’t want to start over again. So I figure those will be my socks and I’ll just start new ones for Michael.

My new Lorna’s Laces yarn!

I ordered some Lorna’s Laces yarn and Arwin and Joey brought them over for me. Look at these scrumptious colorways! The baltic sea colorway (the one on the right) is MINE!

I made some progress on my sock. It’s looking good! As promised, here are some pictures. I’m so pleased at how it’s turning out, I decided to buy some Lorna’s Laces yarn since I just fell in love with all of their colorways. Since I can’t get any here (even online), I had some sent to

I start my first pair of socks

I also started my socks today! My first pair! Since Ingrid (my SP8) sent me that beautiful sock yarn, I found a pattern – just went to the manufacturer’s website and downloaded their free sock pattern and it turns out that I can make a pair with just one hank. My umbrella swift and ball winder haven’t been taken out in awhile (never seem to buy skeins anymore) and I was worried because my swift didn’t open up enough to hold the yarn tightly. But it was ok and I wound it up just fine. The pattern is a very basic ribbed sock. I hate knitting on DPN (double pointed needles) because I always drop them as I’m knitting, and also my stitches tend to be a little loose on the ends of the needles no matter how tight I pull it. But I’m getting somewhere, already 3 inches done! I’m so excited! I’ll have to post “in progress” pictures.

Here it is all wrapped up!
I’ll have you know that the chocolate is almost gone! I LOVE Green and Black’s, they are my favorite chocolate now. Besides, it’s organic, so it must be good for you right?

My first sock yarn. Look at these amazing colors!
Look at this beautiful silk, what should I make with this? A scarf perhaps???
Head to Toe Knits, perfect for me!
The cashmere scarf – look at this tremendous detail! And it’s super soft too. She told me it will get even softer the more I wash it.
Of course I had to try it on! Sorry about the in-the-bathroom-mirror shot. Couldn’t wait for Michael to get home to take a proper picture.

OK, so despite the long day I had today (see other post), I thought I should write about the great package I got from my secret pal (SP8). She is one amazing knitter I can’t believe this package she sent. I got a huge ball of silk yarn, 1 hank of Cherry Tree Hill yarn in the Serengetti colorway, a large vat of breakfast tea “of finest quality”, a bar of can’t-stop-eating green and black’s almond chocolate, “head to toe knits”, 2 candy canes (for the boys), a tea candle and an amazing green lacy cashmere scarf!!! I am totally NOT worthy! She also *FINALLY* revealed herself – her name is Ingrid, she lives in London, and she has twins too (as well as an older child)! You can read about who she is and her amazing knitting projects at http://talesoftheknitty.blogspot.com.

So that’s it. This was the 3rd and final package. I have been so lucky to have an awesome secret pal who spent so much time on making my experience special!!! The yarns that she sent inspired me so much that it made me go out and buy some double pointed needles (despite Elijah’s protests) to try knitting socks. I don’t know if the one hank can do a pair though, maybe ankle socks. I have to find a pattern now and instructions. I think I’ll start with something simple. I’ll keep you posted on my progress (hopefully this weekend!).

Thanks again Ingrid for inspiring me and pushing me to knit! I am always happy when I knit, but sometimes I just need that extra nudge to take the time out and do it. I have added you to my blog list so I can keep up with with you’re doing!!!

What does bockstark mean (pronounced bok-shtark)? My crazy German friend, Matthias, made that word up to mean "really cool" and says that it is catching on in Garmisch. So I am helping him popularize the word! I thought if I ever opened a yarn store, I would call it "Bockstark Yarns". This blog is all about my projects, yarns and crazy ideas related to knitting and other crafts. Contact me at bockstark.knits(at)gmail(dot)com.
