Navajo ply results | July 11, 2008 @ 12:07 pm |
So here is the result of last night’s navajo ply. I was cursing the whole time! ;) Yes, it looks good from afar, but come up close and blech! It’s a lumpy bumpy mess! It’s still knitable, but you can feel many of the joins. I feel like I did a disservice to the flber. It’s so pretty and I just love the subtle patina colors.
And another thing - the yardage sucks!!! I got 272yd/4.2oz. I don’t know how you N-plying people stand it. Ok, it’s nice that you use almost every inch of fiber, but still. And I also read in the Yarn Harlot’s blog that the n-ply is not as strong as a 2ply. I wonder if it has to do with how it’s put together?
I probably won’t do another navajo ply again anytime soon, unless someone has a magic trick that will make everything better. Fbz suggested that I put the lazy kate far far away as it would help with the tension of the single coming off the bobbin. She even promised a video! Ah, what great friends I have!

Ok, now I’m thinking you were just feeling a little bit whiney with yesterday’s post. Because I would SO be feeling ok with NP that looked like that photo! Ok, it’s not perfect… but what handspun is? For perfect, you go to a factory. I think it’s gorgeous and I especially think that when you knit it up, 90% of what’s bothering you will disappear. And the other 10%?… well, that’s character-building. ;-)

I know that you’re probably a perfectionist, but I can tell you that your N-plying doesn’t look as bad as you think it does! Trust me, I’ve been practicing it with my leftover singles, and I’ve made yarn that looks really bad. I mean REALLY bad.
I can see the appeal of Navajo plying when you want a three-ply but don’t have enough fiber to do three separate plies or want to maintain color repeats, but I think I still prefer a two-ply.

I’m going to be a bad friend and tell you to stop spinning and put out the last episode of the podcast already. ;-p

WOw. I just looked at all your handspun and yes, I now understand why you managed to give up your store bought yarn stash- your spinning totally rocks. It makes me want to spin too- and I once tried and sucked big time and swore never to spin! But seeing all this awesome yarn…… yeah- I can understand it. Great work!

It looks great from here. I’ve heard the n-ply isn’t as strong as a traditional 3-ply - I didn’t know it wasn’t even as good as a 2-ply either! I think it is becasue you aren’t actaully even plying at all. It’s more like a crochet chain than a ply (at least from my reading)
I’ll stick with my traditional 3-ply. Nice and strong for socks. Although the yardage sucks!

It totally ROCKS!!! I don’t see anything wrong with your navajo ply job! Handspun yarn is not suppose to be perfect. If it was then you would have store bought just like everyone else. You are a wonderful spinner!

Have you tried whacking it when it’s wet to even it out a bit? I’m not much of whacker, but it might help.
I also tend to agree with everyone else. That yarn rocks. :)

I feel your pain; I’m a navajo plying hater myself. But as everyone pointed out, this yarn looks great! You didn’t lose anything by trying.

The woman who taught me how to Navajo ply, said that the best results come from letting the single ply bobbins sit for a while (let it sit for at least a few weeks). For some reason the twist sets in a bit and produces a much smoother even yarn. I hated my first navajo ply so much too, it looks like stringy twine. I think yours looks amazing, but alas, I totally understand the dissapointment! xx Dani
